Bummer, I just wrote a big response and somehow deleted it. Essentially I said that it's cool that the lead was a SPOILER psycho the whole time, and when the audience think he's being weird, he's actually making an awful plan and using the insane situation to his advantage. And when the audience think he finally realizes he needs to the the "real" girl back, he murders her! Amazing psycho story hidden in the over the top sci fi (which I loved too). Reminded me of that funeral question that only someone with psychopathic tendencies can get right. Just adored this film. Now here's hoping I don't erase this response!
I saw it a little differently. I think he was understandably confused and a victim of the bizarre circumstances. True he committed murder, but the film, to me, raised the question of whether or not the same consequences still apply when the laws of science are thrown out the window. I didn't see him as evil per se, just someone who makes stupid decisions. My opinion could change if I were to watch it again though, and you're right - there's a lot to be said about how he separated himself from the pack and schemed to use the situation to his advantage.
Loved this! It's very cool how there is a super creepy story underneath all the going ons. The final shot is excellent!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear! I dug it too. Loved the soundtrack. Crazy how the lead actor is pretty anonymous in this but plays such a creep in The Purge.
